Natural Anti-aging Tips

Most of us want to stop the aging clock, or at least slow it down. Working in the medical industry has made me well aware of the horrors of aging and what poor-lifestyle choices can do a person in the long run. The health consequences of not taking care yourself are terrifying to say the least. And of course, health consequences aside, most of us want to stay looking young as long as possible.

1. RAW VEGAN LIFESTYLE:

Why be a raw vegan? Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that I don't eat cooked food. I mean, the idea of being vegan is extreme to most, but raw vegan? That's a whole new level. The nutrients in raw, living foods, are more available to the body. The enzymes are still intact and the cellular structure hasn't been modified. Why take something that is already perfect by nature and then cook all the life-force out of it? Fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are readily available for humans to eat without having to do anything to them. They are nature's "fast food." If we must modify and cook something to be able to eat it, the question is, should we be eating it? Fruits and veggies are loaded with antioxidants which help prevent aging and they are also full of perfectly distilled water. It's true that we are what we eat, so why not fuel our bodies with the cleanest fuel that we can?

Being a raw vegan is truly a lifestyle. Once you go down the rabbit-hole of learning about the poisons we are exposed to on a daily basis, it's hard to un-learn it. Eat organic whenever possible, or at least follow the "clean 15 and dirty dozen list." As a rule, never eat any fruits or vegetables with a thin skin such as berries, cucumbers, lettuce, apples etc. that aren't organic; they absorb all the pesticides that are sprayed on them. Non-organic fruits and vegetables with a thick skin are much safer to eat; melons, avocados, bananas, etc.

Not only do you have to be aware of what you are eating, you must also be aware of what you are putting on your skin. Skin will absorb upwards of 80 percent of what you put on it. I'm not going to go into detail about all the nasty chemicals that are put into to cosmetics; if you're curious, research it. Or you can take my word for it that you don't want those chemicals in your bloodstream. There are some awesome natural cosmetic companies out there. In my article on skincare I list the products and companies that I like. For body lotion, I use coconut oil. Almond oil or olive oil are also good choices. I just put the oil on while I'm still in the shower and my skin is still wet and then I pat dry with my towel. If you like getting manicures and pedicures, I'd recommend buying a non-toxic nail polish (100 percent pure has some really nice ones). It's also a good idea to invest in a filter for your shower as there's all kinds of gross stuff in tap water.

2. INTERMITTENT FASTING:

Fasting is crucial. When we are in a fasted state, our bodies are able to regenerate. Essentially, our bodies will "eat" the damaged cells allowing only the best, most perfect cells to remain. Once we have reached a fasted state, our bodies will secrete human growth hormone, which is a very powerful anti-aging hormone. There are many scientific studies that show powerful benefits from fasting and I encourage you to research the subject. It's fascinating.

It may sound difficult to fast, but it really isn't. A very easy way to incorporate fasting into your lifestyle is to do the 16/8 method. Basically, you have an 8 hour eating window and a 16 hour fasting window. For example, you could eat between the hours of 10am-6pm, and then you would not eat again until 10am the next day. You can modify the eating window to fit your schedule. There are other methods of intermittent fasting as well, but I think the 16/8 version is the easiest to start off with.

3. SUPPLEMENTS:

There are some supplements which have been shown to slow down, and may even reverse aging. One of these supplements is L-carnosine. L-carnosine is an anti-oxidant that helps to combat free-radicals. It also helps to prevent damage to the body caused by a process known as cross-linking; when sugars in the body bind with protein. Cross-linking has a big part to play in the aging process. Some studies suggest it is beneficial to take L-carnosine with DMAE and L-carnitine. These supplements have great benefits of their own, but they also help to clean up the byproducts that L-carnosine may produce.

4. SUNSCREEN:

Don't forget about sunscreen! The sun damages our skin, causing wrinkles and skin cancer. Be sure to use a natural sunscreen that has a zinc base. Chemical sunscreens can actually disrupt our hormones. I have the one that I use listed in my skincare article. If you don't want to wear sunscreen, at least wear a hat and stay out of the sun during the worst parts of the day (typically 11am-3pm). As far as vitamin D is concerned, take a vitamin D3 supplement instead of baking in the sun. In addition to sunscreen, you could also try out a supplement called astaxanthin. It is made from the component of algae that helps prevent the algae from getting scorched by the sun. It may have UV protective benefits in humans and it's also a powerful anti-oxidant.

5. ALCOHOL AND SMOKING:

Alcohol is a poison and the body does not know how to process it. It turns to sugar in the body and will be stored as fat. Not only is alcohol terrible for your liver, kidneys, and brain cells, but it will prematurely age you as well. It's awful for your skin! Smoking cigarettes is terrible for your health and skin as well. Don't think that it's safe to smoke anything herbal either. As far as your skin is concerned, smoke is smoke and it will dry out your skin making it look dull and wrinkled no matter what substance you are inhaling into your lungs.
